Advocacy Day 2009

MS advocates stormed the Capitol in Harrisburg on Monday, March 2 for MS Awareness Week to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis and make the legislators and public aware of our policy priorities. The Pennsylvania chapters of the National MS Society brought 2009 policy priorities including adult protective services, assisted living and health care reform to the legislature.

The advocates gathered in the Main Rotunda of the Capitol where an information table was set up with information about the National MS Society, advocacy efforts, volunteer opportunities and upcoming events. Appointments were also set up with legislators on both sides of the aisle with members on key committees such as Appropriations, Public Health and Welfare and Aging and Adult Services. During the visits, legislators were introduced to the organization, made aware that it was MS Awareness week and told about our policy priorities.

Legislators and their staff were invited to come down to the Rotunda to meet our volunteers and share in refreshments provided by Panera Bread. Legislators that came down to the table were able to pick up their policy priorities packets in person. Those who could not make it down to the table had their packets hand delivered by advocates.

The National MS Society’s advocacy efforts were well represented by the volunteers who attended the event. This was the Society’s first Pennsylvania Advocacy Day of many more to come. Each year we will gather to encourage others to Join the Movement to help create a world free of MS.
